As a follow-up to the Sri Lanka’s participation at IBTM China Exhibition, SLCB organized a Familiarization Tour from China held from 12-18 October 2019. A 10 member MICE Delegation comprised leading MICE companies & journalists in Beijing visited Sri Lanka and had unique experience on Sri Lanka’s offering for MICE.

The delegation visited   several MICE places in Negombo, Kandy, Sigiriya, Dambulla and Colombo.  The delegation had familiarization tour in Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), Nalum Pokuna Theatre, both Colombo & outside hotels having conference facilities for witnessing MICE capabilities in Sri Lanka.

The visiting participants had an opportunity to have unique and unforgettable exposure in Sri Lanka by having hands on experience in several iconic places in Sri Lanka during their visit in Negombo, Kandy, Sigiriya, Dambulla & Colombo.

SLCB organized B2B session between the industry members and visited Chinese delegation on 17th October 2019 at Hilton Hotel. The session provided an avenue for Sri Lankan MICE industry members to interact with Chinese delegates to further showcase the MICE capabilities in Sri Lanka.

Research Development & Training

  1. Organization of an Awareness programme for the members of Organization of Professional Association (OPA) membership on SLCB Capabilities

Sri Lanka Convention Bureau in collaboration with the Organization of Professional Association OPA) organized an awareness building programme for the OPA members held on 22nd January 2019 at the Auditorium, OPA.

The Organization of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka is a body of Professionals presently belonging to, 50-member associations catering to 32 disciplines with a total membership of over 50,000. The OPA is considered as the Association which consisted of large number of industry professionals.

The main objective of the programme was to invite OPA members to one forum and make an awareness session on how SLCB & OPA members could work together to win more professional conferences and events to Sri Lanka. There were 25 Associations attended for the awareness Programme.

Sri Lanka Association of Professional Conference, Exhibition & Event Organizers (SLAPCEO) partnered with SLCB for conducting the programme. Mr. Ziyan Ameen,Deputy General Manager –MICE & President of SLAPCEO  made a persenation on the  importance of having International Events in Sri Lanka and our capabilities for conducting such events. Ms. Felicia Adhihetty is a founder and Managing Director of B-connected (Pvt) Ltd & an event management company made a presentation on how to handle an event successfully.  SLCB officials made personation on SLCB role and support for local professional associations to bid for international conferences and information on bidding, financial and in-kind assistance available for them.

The programme provided an opportunity to reach number of local associations in one forum and make aware them on bringing international conferences & meeting to Sri Lanka.

  1. Organization of Regional MICE Training Programme for Cultural Triangle Hoteliers

Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB) with the assistance of SLAPCEO and in collaboration with the Cultural Triangle Hotelier Association organized a one-day training programme for the hoteliers registered with the Cultural Triangle Hoteliers Association under THASL. The programme was organized under the theme of “Effective way of Planning, Organizing & Handling of Business events”

The training programme was held on 22nd February 2019 at Jetwing Lake Hotel, Dambulla. There were 45 Hoteliers were attended for the training comprised Staff of MICE Department, Banquet Staff and Managers and officers who are directly involve with organizing events & meetings and Sales & Front office Staff.

SLCB obtained three resource persons for conducting the training who have experience in organizing and handling of MICE events. Accordingly, Mr. Ziyan Ameen, immediate past President of SLAPCEO made a presentation on Tourism and MICE Tourism Global and Local perspective.

Mrs. Paddy Paul is the Managing Director of Golden Isle Travel (Pvt) Ltd spoke on Basics of Handling MICE events -Incentives –Basics (Who, what, why, how) and Mr. Gihan De Silva is the Chief Executive Officer of MICE.lk (Pvt) Ltd, who specializes in creating experiences for MICE clients done the interactive session on How to create experience on MICE.

SLCB being a Government body in line with their mandate, organized regional training programmes for the benefit of Capacity building of the hoteliers.

  1. Organization of Regional MICE Training Programme for Kandy Hoteliers

Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB) in collaboration with the Kandy Regional Hoteliers Association under THASL organized    MICE/Tourism Training Programme  for hoteliers in the Kandy  on   Tuesday 10th September held in Mahaweli Reach Hotel, Kandy.

Over 45 professionals took part in the training program which was conducted by a panel of experts in various aspects of MICE.

The programme  was organized  under the theme of “Effective way of Planning, Organizing & Handling of Business Events” included presentations of three key speakers, group exercises and team building activities.

The participants comprised   Kandy hotels staff who have in MICE Department, banquet staff, managers and officers who are directly involve with organizing events & meetings and also sales & front office Staff.

 

Mr. Krishantha Fernando, General Manager of SLCB delivered the opening remarks and the training led by three SLAPCEO experts, namely, Mrs. Pady Paul, Mr. Ziyan Ameen & Mr. Gihan De Silva.

Mr. Ziyan Ameen, Deputy General Manager of Aitken Spence Travels Pvt Ltd conducted a session on Tourism and MICE Tourism Global and Local perspective/How can Kandy hotels be more MICEY covered global MICE industry trends and best practices to the MICE industry.

Mrs. Paddy Paul, Managing Director of Golden Isle Travels Pvt Ltd delivered a presentation/Session on Basics of Handling MICE events/Expectations of MICE Organizers –

Incentives –Basics (Who, what, why, how). The session covered how best hoteliers could develop an incentive programmes to develop the incentive travel sector.

Mr. Gihan De Silva, CEO of MICE.lk Pvt Ltd conducted an interactive, team building session on “Creating MICE experiences” The session conducted an interactive way to Energize and Time Sensitive Team Building activities.

During the group exercise session, the participants developed an incentive programme based on the case study provided by the trainers and had group presentations on case study.

A certificate of participation was awarded as the end of the training.
